I was really worried about this month’s theme when Chris suggested it, but I’ve adopted a new policy of not questioning a creative group decision – just go with it. Of course it helped when this track came up on shuffle. Plus, Chris will love the irony. For my first #AprilDuets section, I’ve chosen “Good Times” featuring the vocal stylings of Michael Hutchence from INXS and a dishwasher* named Jimmy Barnes.
The irony? The song is featured on the soundtrack to The Lost Boys — a film I’ve never seen and at this point probably never will. But oh how I love this song. It’s a remake of a Mott the Hopple tune (which should totally be Sid & Marty Krotft character) and it has soul/motown feel to it. The INXS/Jimmy Barnes version is a killer take (I’d say better) and the play between Barnes blusey vocals and Hutchence sexy swagger is awesome. But when they merge together on the chorus – total magic. Blast this in the car as you start your night. Shit will happen.
*Actually, I think he’s considered an Australian national treasure, but good lord, look at that permullet. Even in the 80s that was majorly uncool.
