There’s been a definite pattern with my choice of cover songs lately, in that I fell in love with the cover version long before I heard the original. I don’t want to disappoint my loyal fan by diverging from this path so I present “Dead Souls” as performed by Nine Inch Nails.

This song is definitely the highlight from The Crow soundtrack, I’ll even go out on a 90s alternative limb here and say that most of the album is total rubbish save for “Burn” by the Cure. There are some great artists on there for sure (Helmet, Rollins Band, Violent Femmes and Rage Against the Machine) but the tracks feel like leftovers or demos. If you’re looking to pick up a physical version of this song, I’d skip the soundtrack and pick up the reissue of The Downward Spiral where it’s included as a bonus track instead.

I’ve never been a huge Joy Division fan (heresy, I know). That fact, along with my love for all things NIN and the aforementioned “I heard the cover first” factoid makes the cover version vastly superior to the original.
