First Concert

The car started overheating at some point while cruising the streets of downtown Nashville, looking for a dive called 328 Performance Hall.  We shouldn’t have been surprised – it was summertime in Tennessee and it was as hot as fuck, the AC was cranked and we were stuck in traffic.  I started to panic so we shut off the AC, switched on the heater, opened the windows and tried to bleed off some of the heat that was suffocating the engine.  The car kept running, but by the time we finally found the place, we were drenched in sweat.  Just two, completely filthy, miserable assholes who wanted to see a show.

August 1, 1992 – Rollins Band came to Nashville and decided that it needed to be destroyed.  Fuck yeah it did.  These guys hit the stage and never left up.  My first concert, a pivotal moment and all I can remember is sweat and spit flying, screaming, bodies tossed and turned.  That’s it.  The rest got rocked out of my fucking skull.  I left going, “What the fuck was that I want more.”

I saw a ton more bands at 328.  And it didn’t matter whether it was summer or winter, the place was always boiling.  A little over a week later I saw Smashing Pumpkins there and was totally blown away (amazingly someone recorded the show).  But Rollins will always be my first.
