I was really hoping this album would come up on the 5-star shuffle this week. I was hoping for one of the other songs I’ve got in this playlist, because they’re more like 6 or 7 stars, but this is the one that came up, and them’s the rules.
I don’t have any idea how I first got turned on to this album, but man, do I love it (I think I used to think I should give 7 Seconds a try, and saw this and picked it up). Half of the songs are 3 stars for me (meaning good but not something I listen to all that often, and they’re not portable), and one is 4, but the others are all 5 stars, which is not normal for me.
The album is a collaboration between Matt Skiba from Alkaline Trio and Kevin Seconds from 7 Seconds, two bands I’ve never really listened to. Or maybe it’s not a collaboration but they each just do 5 songs. I usually can’t even keep track of which 5 belong to which musician (though since I’m in the Amazon reviews, I think all my 5 star songs are Skiba’s). This song doesn’t have quite the emotional oomph that some of my other favorites from the album do, but it’s just a fun, upbeat song that always makes me think of NYC (in all the good ways) and the music is killer and pretty much guaranteed to get me tapping my fingers or feet every time.
Saw you standing there holding my heart
Too many drinks pulled the words apart
But I got your name remembered it
Dumbfounded I’m dumb as shitI’m just glad that I went
to the city that daySaw you standing there all alone
For some reason you were holding two coats
I asked you ‘do you need a hand?’
You said ‘No thanks, I’ve got other plans’I’m just glad that I went
To the city that dayAnd I saw him wake up on the sidewalk
His next drink was the topic of talk
He said ‘give me something quick and sweet
my whole life I’ve lived on the street’I’m just glad that I went
to the city that day
to the city that day
to the city that day
to the city that day

P.S. I’m fairly (somewhat) good with my todo list of choice (Todoist), but one thing I’m horrible at is checking it at night, especially on the weekends, even though that’s the perfect time for me to get stuff done. Which is all my excuse for only one post last week. I’ll try to get in an extra this week.
Totally cool. I’m digging this in a big away. Simple, basic, but in a good way. Thanks for turning me on to this. Never heard of either guy or either band. Weird. Reminds me in a weird way of Oysterhead. I’m not a huge Primus, Police or Phish fan, but that one-off album they did… something magical.
I’ve never heard of Oysterhead. I did, however, always figure you would be into this album, which is why I used to tell you about it repeatedly, and even put it on a hard drive you loaned me (can’t remember what was on it of yours). So check your hard drives.
