I don’t think I’m going to get a lot of argument on this post, but “Nothing Natural” by Lush is just a brilliant, brilliant song. In 1991, I was still in high school and surrounded by nothing but country music or Top 40 radio stations. The few of us in town that weren’t cruising the drag in IROCs blasting Garth Brooks or Vanilla Ice were trading VHS tapes of MTV’s 120 Minutes and brother did I ever wear out the section of tape containing this song.
The track by itself is just amazing, containing lyrics that speak to any moody, pseudo or full-blown goth high school student, I mean…
The feeling now you’re gone
This wretched life goes on
The knife inside of me
It turns just like a key
…come on. But pair the story and music with the visuals from the video and it’s just about perfect. I remember staring at these two lovely British girls being assaulted by the lights and thinking they were the most beautiful people I had ever seen. to this day, if the song comes up on shuffle, I never, ever skip it.
