Oh man, “Song 2.” How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
- That beat. Air drums. Real drums. Pots and pans. It’s just fun to play.
- Sludge-filled bass line. ‘Nuff said.
- Nonsense name.
- Lyrics that are all over the place.
- Motherfucking woo hoo!
I tossed this one into the mix one night after I had gone through all my regular songs and the house was practically empty. So. Much. Fun.
For me, anyway.
Apparently the lads meant it as toss-off track; a parody of the grunge America was gaga over at the time (although in ’97 it was definitely waning). I had no idea it was a parody, I just thought the boys were feeling a little aggro in the studio.
This track is rad, but for my money, their debut Leisure is close to perfect (but that’s for another post). Besides all the reasons stated at the begining, the reason it’s so much fun at karaoke is the fucked-up English you can affect while butchering the words. Who doesn’t want to British at least one night of their life? And the woo-hoo’s – if the crowd isn’t woo-hooing with, something is wrong with you or them. Probably them.
I got my head checked
By a jumbo jet
It wasn’t easy
But nothing is, no
Woo HooWhen I feel heavy metal
Woo Hoo!
And I’m pins and I’m needles
Woo Hoo!
Well I lie and I’m easyAll of the time
But I’m never sure
Why I need you
Pleased to meet youI got my head done
When I was young
It’s not my problem
It’s not my problem
Woo Hoo!When I feel heavy metal
Woo Hoo!
And I’m pins and I’m needles
Woo Hoo!
Well I lie and I’m easyAll of the time
But I’m never sure
Why I need you
Pleased to meet youYeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah
Oh yeah
I remember you doing this. I remember you woor-hoos. And I remember your Britishness. It’s one of the only Blur songs I actually know/own, so I’m not complaining. Woo hoo!
