It’s been a long time since I saw this movie, and I don’t really remember it at all (confirmed by just watching the trailer), but I do remember I really liked it. I might have seen it in the theater when it was first released, though 1991 – I may not have entered my big Wim Wenders phase by then, ignited by Wings of Desire. I think I probably had though, because I remember the soundtrack coming out, and though not all of the songs made an impression, there have been a few that have stood out ever since I first heard it.

First, the trailer (William Hurt, smooth and cool as always):

A few of the stand-outs for me:

“The Adversary” – Crime and the City Solution.

I don’t know a thing about this band. This was definitely a one-off hit for me, but it starts off setting this icy tone, and then around the 3:00 minute mark it basically becomes a different song and becomes totally tender.

“Fretless” – R.E.M.

This was in the height of my R.E.M. phase. YouTube tells me this was recorded for “Out of Time” (which explains the Kate Pierson backing vocals) but then left off and used here instead.

“(I’ll Love You) Till the End of the World” – Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds

I never really got into Nick Cave, but I love story songs and this one is fantastic.

“Calling All Angels” – Jane Siberry and k.d. lang

Used in the trailer above as well. Just a really pretty song (and the YouTube comments indicate this was also used in “Pay It Forward”, which I’ve never added to my must-see list).

About Chris

Chris is a digital producer based in Toronto, but don't worry, he's American. He enjoys karaoke and video games that are old enough to cost under $20. He used to be a master of the pit and live shows but can hardly keep up with anything new nowadays, so he usually goes to his happy place of media from his wayward youth. Chris is still trying to figure out what to be when he grows up.

  1. I remember when this movie came out, I really wanted to see it, but never did. And somehow I still haven’t. It might be one of those I just never see. Just looking at the soundtrack listing, I can’t see myself really digging it… so maybe it’ll be one of those albums I never hear. That used to bug me, knowing there are some things I’ll never watch or listen to, but the older I get, the more freeing it becomes to just skip over things and carry on.
