Cyndi Lauper, or at least my appreciation of her, is in the fine wine/better with age category for me. I didn’t have MTV growing up, but this song is one of the songs I associate with the times I got to watch it at a relative’s, and it was always my favorite of her hits.

In the Napster days, I was often on the quest to build the ultimate 80’s playlists, and it certainly included some of her songs. It wasn’t until I picked up this album, however, that I started to truly realize how amazing her voice and musical talent is and how much more awesome her songs became when sung by “mature” Cyndi. It really has some fantastic versions of her songs. At the time, I was probably also in my Sarah McLachlan phase, so combine their two voices with one of my favorite songs from the 80’s and you have a winner.

Coincidentally, this works perfectly as a second post on #KaraokeTuesday, because I love singing the male part of the original, and am always looking for partners on it.

I don’t think there’s an official video for this version, and I’m not sure what’s up with the old-timey filter on this live performance version, but it’s great to see her sing and play:

About Chris

Chris is a digital producer based in Toronto, but don't worry, he's American. He enjoys karaoke and video games that are old enough to cost under $20. He used to be a master of the pit and live shows but can hardly keep up with anything new nowadays, so he usually goes to his happy place of media from his wayward youth. Chris is still trying to figure out what to be when he grows up.
