Sure, this was a big hit off of a big album that really brought R.E.M. into the mainstream, but the only really important thing is that this is the song that represents Brenda losing her virginity to Dylan. I’m pretty positive they played parts of this song somewhere around 87 times during that episode of 90210.

I do truly enjoy this song, but I hardly ever do it at karaoke. i think part of it may be that, though I’m certainly and obviously not against singing songs with extreme sincerity, this one almost goes too far in the sincerity it requires. Another reason may be that there are songs that everyone has heard a million times but that are acceptable as karaoke standards (Sweet Caroline, Don’t Stop Believin’, etc.), and then there are songs like this that everyone has heard a million times, and don’t really need to hear another time. Everyone knows the words to this, but no one wants to sing along.

All the same, it’s come out of my mouth and into a microphone, so it counts for this week’s entry.
