Zwan was a shitty band (I feel so much better having typed that).  Mary Star of the Sea served as both the debut release and the final gasp of a band that never should have existed in the first place.  It’s a complete train-wreck.  Although, there is one redeeming factor in this monstrosity and it’s located on track six.

I’m not saying the Pumpkins should have stayed together, there were definite diminishing returns on everything after Mellon Collie, but Zwan was atotal clusterfuck generated by Billy Corgan’s fucked-up fever dream.  Sorry dude, you weren’t due a second go-around.  But, this song is absolutely gorgeous, and for a Pumpkins Billy Corgan song, it’s remarkably singable.  Decent range and the phrasing is pretty normal.

It’s a downer for sure, but I feel like it would have its place in an evening of karaoke hot jams.  Maybe after three or four feel-good 90s hits, or a pop-punk fest, when people need to sit and just listen while they queue up more songs, this would be perfect.  The most important thing with “Of a Broken Heart” would be to let it breathe.  Don’t punch that next up-tempo song in right away.  Maybe the bartender is lingering a bit making drinks.  That’s okay.  Let this one sit for a while.

Not that it exists in song books… nor should it.  But in your own private car-a-oke, driving down home at night, yeah it’ll be there, waiting to get sung.
