I’m not really a huge Pink Floyd fan. I don’t dislike the Floyd I just never had much exposure.  They’ll probably end up being another Zeppelin for me – a few years from now I’ll be way, way into them.  I didn’t get around to Zeppelin until maybe ten years ago, but now I totally get it.  So don’t give up on me Pink Floyd fans; I might come around.  This particular song though, I absolutely loved from the moment I saw the music video back in ’87 or ’88.  Probably watching Dial MTV…

There’s been a definite pattern with my choice of cover  songs lately, in that I fell in love with the cover version long before I heard the original.   I don’t want to disappoint my loyal fan by diverging from this path so I present “Dead Souls” as performed by Nine Inch Nails.

I’m totally behind on my posts, so I was feeling a bit stressed on what to pick for the karaoke entry.  I had something completely different in mind when I decided to hit MNP to see what Chris had cooked up for his entry.  Upon seeing “Brick” I thought FUCK IT and countered with my own depressing karaoke song.  Ladies and gentled, the song you should never sing with expectant parents in the room… “Lightning Crashes.”

Confession time: I got into the Pixies really late in the game.  I was familiar with them from watching 120 Minutes but for some reason nothing really stuck with me at the time.  I now consider them one of my all-time favorite bands, but I can’t cop to being there at the beginning like most of my other friends.  Why did I take so long for me to catch on? I’m not sure, but when it did, it stuck.  Hard.

I had fully intended on picking a song I regularly sing at karaoke because I’m trying to make it a week without being whiney.  I didn’t wanna get sucked into the black hole that is “Man, I wish they had ____.”  But fuck man, I wish karaoke joints had some Ned’s Atomic Dustbin jams.

Dig had an alterna hit of some kind in the 90s but hell if I can remember what it was.  And I pretty much only watched Fat Albert when I stumbled across it.  So you wouldn’t think there would be much to draw me towards this cover by a mediocre band of a mediocre cartoon theme song but there’s something about this track that just kind rocks.

Chris gave me the honor of picking this month’s theme on MNP and it couldn’t have come at a worse time.  I’m in NYC on business, I’m way behind on work for my second job, I missed a good party in Austin this week and my shoes are still soaked from a freakish monsoon that hit NYC yesterday.  But this morning the clouds parted and Manhattan was just gorgeous, bathed in sunlight and warm.  I was mulling over  the theme when I had lunch with an old friend who always reminds me of Jane’s addiction. “Summertime Rolls” came to mind and in my mind that’s a perfect summer song.

Perfect Albums: Ten

In my mind, a perfect album is one you can start playing at track one and go all the way to the end without wanting to hit skip. That’s no small feat in my book.  Ever since random access became possible with CDs, I developed a serious case of music ADD.  I’ll start a song I like, get to the chorus and want to skip ahead to hear another chorus.  Back in the day of vinyl and cassette you pretty much had to let an album or at the very least a side play through to completion.  For me, Ten is the prime example of a perfect album.  You can set and forget it.  Bonus points because it sounds even better cruising down the highway with the windows rolled down.

I tried to sing this song a couple of times at karaoke and completely botched it.  The song has such a high register, even for me.  I had given up all hope until I heard a buddy sing it a couple of octaves lower.  It took on a completely different vibe – almost sinister.  I’m still trying to master it, but it’s so fun giving it a shot.
